The Future of Home Heating & Cooling: Understanding A2L Refrigerants

Navigating the Transition to R-32 and R-454B in Ontario

The HVAC industry is undergoing a massive shift. Due to climate change and the implementation of new environmental regulations, the traditional refrigerant used in air conditioners and heat pumps over the last two decades (R-410A) is now being phased out.

Over 2025–2026, many manufacturers are transitioning to a new class of refrigerants known as A2Ls, specifically R-32 and R-454B.

At Kawartha Eco Climate Control, we believe in keeping our customers informed and ahead of the curve. Here is what you need to know about this transition and how it benefits your home.

What Are A2L Refrigerants?

Mitsubishi ductless Hyper-Heat outdoor on wall brackets.Refrigerants are the chemical fluids inside your heat pump or air conditioner that absorb and release heat, allowing the system to cool your home in the summer and warm it in the winter.

For years, R-410A was the industry standard. However, it has a high Global Warming Potential (GWP). The new A2L refrigerants, R-32 and R-454B, are being increasingly used by major manufacturers to reduce this harmful impact on the environment.

  • Up to 78% Lower GWP: In comparison to the legacy R410A, the new A2L refrigerants have a much lower Global Warming Potential, resulting in a much lower carbon footprint.
  • Better Heat Transfer: The new A2L refrigerants were created with better thermodynamics, absorbing and releasing heat more efficiently.

How Does This Benefit You as a Homeowner?

If you are thinking about upgrading to an All-Electric Cold Climate Heat Pump or a Ductless Mini-Split system, selecting a system that utilizes R-32 or R-454B refrigerant provides the following benefits:

  1. Lower Operating Costs: As R-32 and R-454B refrigerants are more effective at transferring heat, meaning that the compressor doesn’t have to work as hard. This results in higher SEER2 and HSPF2 efficiency ratings, saving you money on hydro bills.
  2. Future-Proofing Your Investment: If you purchase a system utilizing the latest refrigerant, you can ensure that not only will the equipment meet all upcoming environmental legislation, but that replacement refrigerant will be readily available and affordable for the full lifespan of your unit.
  3. Smaller Equipment Footprint: As A2L refrigerant-based equipment operates at such a high efficiency, this can result in smaller and quieter outdoor units that require less overall refrigerant charge.

Professional, Safe Installation is Required

A2L stands for mildly flammable. While they are extremely safe for residential use, already operating in millions of homes worldwide, they do require new, stringent installation protocols.

This is why professional installation is more important than ever.

At Kawartha Eco Climate Control, our technicians are fully trained and certified in the safe handling, recovery, and installation of R-32 and R-454B systems. We comply with manufacturer specifications and best practices for the installation of A2L systems, including proper pressure testing, evacuation, leak checking, and full commissioning of systems at startup.
